Full Moon

Thursday night, we had a beautiful full moon. I was mesmerized driving into it's brilliance on my way home. In popular culture a full moon may elicit anxiety and fear as it has been associated with unfortunate events, bad luck, and evil. Yet, when looking more carefully an all together different connotation is clear. My interpretation is that a full moon symbolizes clarity and the end of one cycle and the beginning of another. With it's fullness and light, it demands our attention. It represents completion, culmination, totality, renewal. It calls awareness to the waxing and waning, the continual flux and motion that is life. The sanksrit yoga term for constant change is parinmavada, and it is an essential life force. Thus, a full moon is nothing to be feared but is something to be acknowledged and celebrated. It is this very cycle that allows for any experience and motion.

This energy and clarity of the full moon manifests itself from the macrocosm to the microcosm - from society to internal life. On Thursday night, I finally watched Kony 2012, a film demanding awareness, change and action. The full moon punctuates this plea - an ending of a cycle of human ignorance, helplessness and passivity and entrance into compassion, collective effort and strength in unity. The video and luminous moon struck something within me. I had one of those crystalline life moments - powerfully present. And, maybe I'm reading into it all. Maybe it is just a moon and an impassioned video - but I know we have the capacity to think symbolically for a reason. If I acquire meaning and feel more alive from seemingly distinct events, then there is something there. To me, it is all further proof of our innate connection to everything. Annnnd, there is no arguing of the lunar control over women's menstruation and the tide - more cycles. So, let's smile instead of grimace at the coming of the full moon (...unless of course that grimace is from cramps, ha...in that case at least still be grateful that it will pass just as the moon does).

Lunar Love!
